History

Developed by the Maxson Corporation during the Second World War, the M45 Quad Mount was conceived as a highly effective mobile anti-aircraft system capable of engaging low-flying aircraft with devastating firepower. Equipped with four .50 caliber Browning machine guns, the system combined a high rate of fire with electrically powered aiming, offering a significant tactical advantage in fast-moving combat environments.

Widely deployed by United States and Allied forces across both the European and Pacific theatres, the M45 quickly earned a reputation for reliability and effectiveness. Its versatility also saw it employed against ground targets, where its concentrated firepower proved equally formidable. The system continued in service beyond the Second World War, notably during the Korean War.

Mounted on the M20 trailer, the unit provided mobility and rapid deployment capability, making it a vital asset in forward defense positions. Today, surviving examples are highly prized for their historical importance, mechanical ingenuity, and unmistakable visual presence. Today, it remains a highly sought-after collector’s item due to its historical significance, striking appearance, and advanced engineering for its time.

In addition to its primary role as an anti-aircraft system, the M45 Quad Mount proved devastatingly effective against ground targets. Its immense combined firepower earned it the infamous nickname “meat chopper” among troops, reflecting both its effectiveness and psychological impact on the battlefield.
